Traverse City Wineries: Left Foot Charley
An Urban Traverse City Winery
In Northern Michigan, wineries come in all shapes and sizes, and are located in a host of different settings. Perhaps no winery has a more unique setting than Left Foot Charley. Located on the former campus of the Northern Michigan Asylum, Left Foot Charley sits on incredibly historic wooded land, surrounded by buildings that date back as far as 1885. The renovations of these former asylum buildings form a small complex of locally-owned restaurants, tasting rooms, coffee shops and knick-knack stores known as The Village. The Village is a quiet, secluded area and is an excellent place to escape the hustle and bustle of downtown Traverse City.
Incredible Wine and Cider
Left Foot Charley is known for their wide assortment of wines and ciders. Producing Pinot Gris, Rieslings, and hard ciders that are sure to please everyone on our tour group. You can see their full list of offerings here, but we want to highlight a cider that has quickly become a crowd favorite on our tours. Called Cinnamon Girl, the beverage combines two of the best things in the world – apples and cinnamon. They source the apples locally from Old Mission Peninsula. A long, specific aging process occurs before the apples are pressed and fermented in stainless steel containers for six weeks. Then cinnamon sticks are added to the mix and a four to six-week steeping process occurs. The end result is a perfect blend of apple tart and cinnamon sweet flavors.
