The School House Winery: Peninsula Cellars

We love the history of Peninsula Cellars! The Kroupa Family planted their first grapes in 1991 on their family property. Three years later they opened their first tasting room which was located in the Old Mission General store! Six years later the Maple Grove Schoolhouse became available and they purchased it and started selling their wine out of it a few years later. Since then they have grown more popular each year, particularly sparking the interests of teachers and educators since they’ve now taken on the whole schoolhouse theme-even naming some wine Detention and Home Work!

The Tasting Room at Peninsula Cellars

Located just 15 minutes from downtown Traverse City you’ll find the adorable schoolhouse tasting room for Peninsula Cellars Winery. Not only can you sample their wine here,  you can also buy cute wine related retail and you can see the original Maple Grove School House-the school retains its original windows, floors, slate chalkboards, light fixtures, and bell .

They even have a map in their tasting room that tells you where all their grapes are planted!

The Wine at Peninsula Cellars

The wines pictured above are their most popular and signature collection that keeps visitors coming back each year! The most popular wines are the Detention, a sweet red blend, and Home Work, a sweet styled rose. Although these are their most popular Peninsula Cellars has over 12 different kinds of wine for you to try next time you are visiting. Our personal favorites are the Manigold Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir Rose, and Detention.

Not into wine!? Although Peninsula Cellars has been known to turn a non-wine drinker into a wino they do offer some other drinks so everyone has something to enjoy.  They offer homemade Sangria (yes wine based but you should still try it!), Hard Ciders and Old Fashioned Root Beer. After your tasting grab a glass and enjoy it on their patio!
