Traverse City Distilleries: The Spirits of Traverse City

Traverse City Distilleries

Traverse City has quickly gained a reputation for having some of the best distilleries in the state. From incredible whiskey to some of the best vodka anywhere, you can have an incredible afternoon of tasting spirits without stepping foot into a winery. Our distilleries have become so popular that they stand alone as an enticing and exciting reason to visit Traverse City. Get to know a few of the most popular distilleries in Northern Michigan!

Civilized Spirits – Old Mission Peninsula

Set on the West Bay is the lone operating distillery on Old Mission Peninsula. Civilized Spirits has been on the OMP since 2008, the distillery is home to a 350-gallon still which is capable of producing 190 proof spirits. Not just content settling for high-quality spirits, the operation is extremely environmentally conscious. Their process includes no harmful chemical cleaners being let out into the water system, and they even operate using compact fluorescent light bulbs to minimize their energy consumption.

Civilized Spirits produces vodka, whiskey, rum, and gin; all of which are available for tasting!

Grand Traverse Distillery – Traverse City

Grand Traverse Distillery is, in many ways, the Grandfather of distilling in Michigan. A certified micro-distillery and known as the oldest grain-to-bottle distillery in the state, Grand Traverse Distillery is one of the most well-known and successful distilleries in the Midwest. They’ve gained a reputation for making award-winning vodkas, whiskeys, bourbons, gins, and rums. Grand Traverse Distillery offers tours of their distillery, and also have tasting rooms in downtown Traverse City and Leland, making them an easy addition to almost any tour.

Northern Latitudes Distillery – Lake Leelanau

Up in Lake Leelanau is a place called Northern Latitudes Distillery. On any of our Leelanau county tours, Northern Latitudes is one of the most talked-about stops on the ride home. Why? They have plenty of unique vodkas, rums, gins, and whiskeys, none of which you’ve ever tasted anything like them before. A perennial favorite of our friends and guests is the Michigan Dogman Moonshine. It’s complete with a tall tale that the locals will proudly recite on-demand.

Traverse City Whiskey Co. – Traverse City

Proof that you don’t have to do a lot to be successful, you just have to do one thing really, really well. TC Whiskey Co. certainly has the whole whiskey thing down pat, with a really cool distillery right in the heart of Traverse City. The 2,500 square foot facility and tasting room is a unique and laid back experience. If all that matters to you is the taste, then I can tell you that the Traverse City Whiskey Co. makes one of the smoothest, most delicious whiskeys this side of Kentucky.
